Mercury Rev’s Complete Peel Sessions

Do you remember the first time you heard Mercury Rev on the radio? If you’re in the UK, chances are you might have been listening to the John Peel show. John was the champion of the unheard and the obscure. The DJ who gave many artists and bands their first, and sometimes, only chance to be heard on national radio.

This double CD makes Mercury Rev’s complete Peel Sessions available for the first time. The band spent over 20 hours on their first session, creating unique versions of four tracks from their debut album, Yerself Is Steam. 1993 and 1995 saw the band record two more sessions for John, including a cover of “I Only Have Eyes For You”. In 1999 the band returned to the legendary BBC studios in support of their fourth studio album, Deserter’s Songs. Included in these session are versions of “The Funny Bird”, “Tonite It Shows”, as well as great covers by John Lennon and Captain Beefheart. The artwork contains recollections from Jonathan Donahue about his time recording for John: ‘we took it so seriously, it was like we were doing an audition for some huge mogul like Clive Davis’.

This is a fantastic retrospective, an alternative Greatest Hits that charts the band’s rise to the successes of Deserter’s Songs and gives a glimpse into the under-the-gun style of recording at the BBC’s studios. Two Special Nights in Copenhagen!

Co2penhagen.com – The world’s foremost carbon-neutral festival! The Mercury Rev Clear Light Ensemble, featuring special guests, will perform 2 nights of live, in the moment, freaked-out, far-out, late-night ambient soundscapes to a series of avant/experimental and early silent Danish Films. Performances will take place on Saturday September 5th (avant/experimental 1940-1960) and Sunday September 6th (silent Film classics from 1920-1940). In a unique collaboration with the Danish Film Institute, these two extraordinary nights will see the American musical icons Mercury Rev celebrating and illuminating many of Denmark’s greatest early cinematic pioneers and landmark achievements in film set amidst the innovative backdrop of some of the world’s newest carbon-neutral/green efforts in technology on display at this ground-breaking festival!

Both evenings performances will be very very very limited seating, intimate per the occasion, so please contact Co2penhagen.com directly for further details on how to attend. There is no separate admission for these performances, in that you must purchase the (amazingily,crazily inexpensive) festival entrance tickets to be admitted. Screening times to be announced (though for sure the Saturday performance will be after the soccer game!) and yes, there will be beer…

Saturday’s performance will be wholly dedicated to the abstract/avant films of Denmark, featuring classics by Albert Mertz, Robert Jacobsen, Richard Mortensen and many more of Denmark’s remarkably unique directors active during this incredibly creative period of Art history.

Sunday’s performance will be entirely dedicated to early Danish silent films from the 1920’s – 1940’s. A stunning array of film selections showcasing the earliest of Danish forays into Silent Cinema such as maverick directors Carl Dreyer and Pool Henningsen, along with wonderful footage of the Silent Queen Asta Nielsen and much much more.

New Japanese Shows

Mercury Rev will return to Japan for the first time in almost 4 years this August to perform at Summer Sonic 2009. The festival takes place in Tokyo & Osaka on August 7, 8 & 9.
